1. TRIPHALA

It is prepared using three important herbs i.e. Amalaki (amla), Haritaki (Harad), and Bibhitaki (Baheda), all of which are known to help relieve constipation. Amalaki works on treating pitta dosha, Bibhitaki on Kapha dosha, and Haritaki on Vata dosha. All three compounds help rejuvenate and strengthen the digestive system.

Application

  • 1 tablespoon Triphala powder daily with lukewarm water helps in easy bowel movement 
  • Triphala tea can also be prepared with 1/4th tsp. of Triphala powder, ½ teaspoon of coriander seeds, and 1/4th teaspoon of cardamom seeds.
  • Grind all the ingredients together and intake twice a day. Triphala comprises glycoside that contains laxative properties whereas Cardamom and Coriander seeds are beneficial to relieve flatulence and indigestion.

2. GHEE WITH MILK

It is one of the oldest and most effective remedies to treat constipation. Since ancient times it was believed that the consumption of Cow’s ghee with milk promotes gut health, eases bowel movements, and is a healthy source of nutrients for the body. Application

  • 1 cup of hot milk, add 1 tablespoon of ghee into it before getting to bed is an effective remedy to relieve constipation. In chronic constipation, you may add more than 1 tablespoon of ghee.  

3. FRUITS

Guava, Pear, and Papaya are the best fruits to be consumed if constipation. 

Guava: Guava when eaten with seeds provides an ample amount of roughage in your diet which is a very effective

4. FENNEL SEEDS

 Fennel seeds promote digestion and help soothe swelling and irritation and relax the muscles in the intestine which relieves constipation. Fennel seeds are one such natural effective laxative to treat constipation. 

Application

  • 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds powder to be taken at bedtime with a glass of lukewarm water works as a laxative to treat constipation. 

5. ANJEER & FIGS

Figs promote easy bowel movement and help relieve excess pressure on hemorrhoid tissues thus making the stool softer and facilitating its easier expulsion. Due to the higher content of fiber in figs and Anjeer, they are highly recommended for constipation. Anjeer is a natural way to treat constipation as it acts as a natural laxative and helps prevent constipation and digestive disorders. 

Application

  • 2-3 dried figs and Anjeer soaked in water overnight.
  • Consume them daily in the morning empty stomach for at least 15 days to relieve constipation.  

6. CASTOR OIL

Castor oil works as a natural laxative. It is believed that castor oil has the ability and power to treat constipation easily. The functioning of the intestine is easily stimulated with the use of castor oil. 

Application

  • 10 drops of Castor oil daily empty stomach promotes easy bowel movement. One passes the stool within 5 hours of its consumption. 

7. YOGA

Yoga is always known for its benefits in treating a disease. Inverted yoga postures i.e. going upside down promote easy bowel movements. Postures such as ‘Viparita Karani’ (legs up the wall pose) can help reverse the flow of ‘prana’ in the body and aid better integration.   • In ½ cup of hot milk add 1 tsp. of Haritaki and 1 tsp. of ghee.

  • Let the mixture cool down and then add 1 tsp. of honey before consuming it. 
  • It even treats chronic constipation if taken daily for 30 minutes before getting into bed.  

10. DIET

Diet plays a very important role in treating a disease, especially constipation. It is very natural if your diet lacks rich fiber diet, you are on the urge of getting constipation. The best diet to follow is a Vata-pacifying diet which includes no intake of cold beverages and also cold food. Subtract refind oil from your diet. It is advised to consume warm food & drinks and add whole grains, cereals, green leafy vegetables, pumpkin, and fruits. Eating meals at odd times, and overeating should be avoided. Prefer jaggery or honey over sugar and sugary products. Increase the intake of water. Drink a maximum of 2 liters of water a day.

  • Exercising regularly, walking in the fresh air, spending some time in outdoor games, and swimming, are also very helpful as it tones up muscles hence treating constipation.
