What is High Cholesterol?
In simple terms, Cholesterol can be defined as a waxy or fat-like substance. It is mainly found in the cells and blood of your body. Whereas its adequate amount is essential for the body to function and build healthy cells, its excessive presence can become the reason for multiple serious health concerns.
A total cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL or more is considered a high cholesterol level. During high cholesterol, the fat starts to accumulate in the blood vessels and makes it hard for the blood to flow through the arteries.
In medical language, it is called “Hyperlipidemia.” High cholesterol also increases the risk of stroke, heart blockages, poor blood circulation to the brain, plaque buildup in the arteries, and so on.
Ayurvedic treatment for high cholesterol works on balancing “Meda Dhatu”, the governor of the body’s whole lipid profile, including fats like triglycerides, and cholesterol. It mainly includes making healthy dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and the adoption of yoga, meditation, and herbal remedies into routine regimes.
People often confuse HDL or LDL cholesterol levels with Triglycerides. However, all these are 2 different terms and a brief about them is as follows:
* Triglycerides → These are the most common types of fat that circulate in your blood and are mainly used by your body for energy purposes.
* HDL → The full form of HDL is high-density lipoprotein and this is a good cholesterol. Prepared with the combination of fat and protein, HDL absorbs excess cholesterol from your blood and carries it back to your liver.
* LDL→It stands for “low-density lipoprotein” which is a bad cholesterol for the body. It mainly contains excessive cholesterol and a very low protein. If it is high, it may support problems such as plaque buildup in the arteries, heart attack, and stroke.
