What is Menopause?

An end of the menstrual cycle is termed Menopause. In Ayurveda, the menopausal syndrome is known as Rajonivrutti which means the end of the menstruation cycle i.e. monthly period cycle comes to an end. The natural transition generally occurs at the age of 45-55 years which is a biological process. A woman goes through many physical and emotional changes during this period. When the ovaries stop producing the hormones i.e. there is no longer release of an egg each month and to produce the female sex hormones Oestrogen and progesterone. The fall in the level of these hormones in the bloodstream gives rise to the symptoms of menopause. It is the end of the fertility period. The importance of diet in menopause is highly advised for a healthy body.

Causes of Menopause

The first thing to mention is menopause is a natural female body process observed after a certain age. However, there are certain factors that may make this condition more bothersome, complicated, and intolerable such as:

  • Ageing- Menopause is a natural biological process that every woman has to go through after a certain age. Generally, between the age of 45 to 55 females experience this, but in certain cases, it could be also earlier.
  • Non-nutritious diet- Lack of vitamins, nutrients, calcium, and other minerals in your food may also be responsible for the occurrence of early menopause. Diet has a direct link with your mind and body, whatever you intake will be reflected on your body.
  • Ovaries removal- Menopause can also be accompanied by any surgery such as the removal of ovaries due to oophorectomy, or removal of the uterus due to Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB).
  • Hormonal Differences- One of the vital menopause causes includes hormonal imbalance. Menopause also prevails when ovaries stop releasing eggs, or oestrogen and other reproductive hormones start declining.
  • Excessive alcohol & smoking- Excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking acts as an open invitation to early and complicated menopause. These substances deliver several negative influences on ovarian ageing and follicle reserve.
  • Distress- Whenever you are under stress, your body releases several stress hormones that may adversely affect your reproductive ability, thus serving as prominent early menopause causes.
