What is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis when uric acid increases in blood and there is sudden pain and inflammation in one joint. Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines, which are part of food which we eat. Development of Gout is more common in men in comparison to women. Chances of gout rises even with growing age. Women sometimes after menopause are affected by gout disease. Women levels of uric acid increase in blood termed ashyperuricemia but all hyperuricemia patients will not develop gout. If parents are affected with gout, then it may be 20 percent chances of developing the next generation. There are some risk factors in male which causes gout like obesity, congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes andpoor kidney functions. The risk of gout is greater with alcohol intake and with food highlyrich in protein. An attack of gout sometimes occur out of sudden after waking up in the middle of night with a sensation of toes burning and the joint feels like burning, hot and swollen.

Certain diuretics drugs and disease like hypothyroid can elevates levels of uric acid in body. Gout may occur again after several weeks or months if its treatment is not done timely.

What are the main causes of Gout?

A long list of causes of gout arthritis can be devised that may possibly be responsible for this problem. However, some of these common causative factors include:

  • Excess of uric acid in the bloodstream- The problem of gout mainly arises when Urates crystals start to form. Once developed, they start to accumulate in the joints and start to be responsible for all the inflammation, pain, and small firm lumps called tophi.
  • Over-eating- Often people consume food even before the digestion of the previous meal in the body, which results in the formation of toxins inside the body. This eventually contributes to the problem of gout in the long run. Additionally, the intake of purine-rich foods and excessive non-vegetarian diet can also contribute to gouty arthritis.
  • Genetics- It may be possible that this condition may run in families, where an individual may likely experience it if any of his parent (both, or single) have the problem of uric acid, gout, or gouty arthritis throughout any course of their life.
  • Alcohol overuse- Substances such as alcohol, beer, wine, etc contain various compounds that can contribute to aggravating uarte levels. Furthermore such drinks, mainly beers are high in purines which further supports the development of gouty arthritis.
  • Overuse of medications- The prolonged consumption of steroid-based medicines harms your body in multiple ways and one of these is gout. Diuretics, beta-blockers, niacin, low-dose aspirin, and chemotherapy medicine are some of the medicines that may support the development of gout.
  • Chronic kidney diseases- The problem of gout may also arise when your body produces too much uric acid but your kidneys are not able to remove enough uric acid through the urine. As a result, it starts to build up in the blood and eventually turns into the problem of gout in the long run.

Gout Symptoms

Depending upon the unique body constitution and joint health, the pain and discomfort accompanied by gout can vary significantly. However, below are some common gout symptoms that are seen among patients:

  • Throbbing Pain- A prime symptom of gout is severe pain in one or more joints, very often the big toe, knee, or ankle. In starting this pain may be mild but with time, it may turn worse and start to feel crushing, or excruciating.
  • Swelling- The painful joints are often followed by severe inflammation in the affected areas. While touching or pressing on these joints, a drastic sensation may also be experienced.
  • Redness- With aggravated levels of urate, the crystals not only result in an inflammatory reaction but also change the natural tone of the skin, and make it red and stiff. Sometimes, it may be difficult to observe the redness on the darker skin.
  • Restricted body movement-As the joints are already stiff, and red. Also, whenever, a patient uses them, even for mild walking or bending, he/she may experience intolerable joint pain. If not treated timely, it may also be responsible for a complete bedridden condition.
  • Kidney stones- Patients with gout due to the poor functioning of the kidneys and corresponding high levels of uric acid in the body, often complain of kidney stone problems.
  • Nodule formation- Last but prime, nodules called tophi in gout are also quite common among patients. These mainly form beneath the skin when urate crystals are built up. Not confined to one, these can affect joints, bones, or even the cartilage.

If not treated timely, these symptoms can worsen day by day and even result in erosion or complete destruction of the joints. Out of countless, Ayurveda has shown the most effective results in treating gout problems among patients over the years.
