What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis in the most simple language, can be defined as a chronic auto-immune skin condition. Around 125 million individuals worldwide have psoriasis say the studies of the World Psoriasis Day consortium

During psoriasis, the immune system of the body starts to overreact which further compels your skin to turn red, scaly, patchy, itchy, and irritated. Quite often, people ignore psoriasis symptoms until they become severe. But let us make it clear that if psoriasis is not treated within the required time frame, it may also cause permanent damage to your skin.

In Ayurvedic textbooks, the condition of psoriasis is called “kitibha” which possibly may arise due to dushit rakta, vitiation of twak, lasika, and mamsa, or aggravated Vata dosha and Kapha dosha. Psoriasis treatment in Ayurveda is focused on treating the actual root causes of the disease, easing psoriasis complications like shyava varna (skin discoloration), kina khara sparsham (rough touch), kandu (itching), ruksha (dryness), parushatva (hardness) and ensuring long-term relief to the patient.

We, Dr. Sharda Ayurveda, take pride in providing the best psoriasis treatment in India as we have the most effective Ayurvedic medicines for psoriasis and the best Ayurvedic doctors who are not only highly qualified but considerably experienced.

Psoriasis Causes

Besides the major cause which is to say faulty immune system response, there could be multiple other factors that may be the actual culprits behind causing or triggering different psoriasis types. It mainly includes:

  • Family History: It is seen that sometimes the condition of psoriasis spreads or may run in families and an individual may acquire it into their genes from their parents. Those whose parents, siblings, or any blood relative have psoriasis, remain a step closer to developing psoriasis and other auto-immune conditions.

  • Diet: Consumption of Tamsik ahaara, or foods that are highly fried, oily, processed, or rich in sugar and saturated or trans fat directly contributes to psoriasis flare-ups. Whereas your normal intakes such as dairy products, gluten, or non-vegetarian items, if taken in excess amounts can also contribute to psoriasis development.

  • Stress: Not being confined to physical causes alone, but also mental stress can be a common cause or triggering factor for psoriasis. When an individual is in a state of stress, the body starts to release chemicals that increase inflammation, a worsening condition in psoriasis.

  • Medications: Psoriasis may sometimes arise as a result of the counter-effect of prolonged medications taken for high blood pressure, heart conditions, stress, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, IBS, or cancer. Such drugs often contain high levels of steroids which harm your skin in multiple ways and make the person prone to psoriasis as well as countless several serious diseases.

  • Alcohol intake: Those who drink alcohol excessively can also experience psoriasis flare-ups to a great extent. Firstly, it generates an inflammatory response in the body and also confuses your immune system to function improperly. As a result, the individual starts to experience psoriasis on lips, legs, face, arms, trunks, and all other parts of the body.

  • Infections: Certain skin infections, HIV, strep throat, or upper respiratory infections can also trigger or worsen psoriasis due to an overreaction of the immune system. Such overreaction forces your immune system to attack healthy skin cells, assuming them as harmful foreign substances.

  • Any skin injury or climate changes: Sometimes any skin injury, cut, scrape, bug bite, dry environment, or cold weather can also trigger several skin problems including psoriasis, eczema, fungal infection, and so on.

Psoriasis Symptoms

The symptoms of psoriasis can vary a lot or a little. This depends on how severe the condition is and your skin type. However, some signs that indicate psoriasis are as follows

  • Discomforting patches: Red and raised patches, often called plagues are seen on the skin mainly on the elbows, knees, palms, scalp, and trunk. Such patches portray silvery-white scales, which make it quite discomforting to even look at.
  • Skin dryness: The skin of a psoriasis patient becomes extremely dry. The cracks on such dried start to arise which sometimes even result in bleeding and skin peeling off.
  • Intense itching: Patients, especially those who have scalp psoriasis, often complain of intense itching, a sense of burning sensation, and dandruff. Such complications become way more intolerable when a person sweats.
  • Pitted Nails: Pale and yellow nails are yet another sign of psoriasis. Besides, discoloration, nail pitting, small dents, and notches can also be seen. Sometimes, the psoriasis on fingers or toes may worsen this much that the nails start to fall off.
  • Joint pain and swelling: Being an auto-immune condition it could also affect your joint health where possibly, your joints may turn painful, stiff, and inflamed, commonly called psoriatic arthritis.

Symptoms may vary if one has a less common type of psoriasis.
