What is Fatty Liver?

Fatty liver simply means the buildup of undue, or excessive fat in the liver. The condition is often known as hepatic steatosis. Storing fat is a primary function of the liver, but as you know, excessive of everything is detrimental.

The problem is mainly associated with diabetes and obesity, and in India, it is increasing at an alarming rate as a large population of India is either diabetic or obese. Nearly 120 million, simply saying around 16 to 32% of Indians have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

The liver is the second largest organ of the body and requires utmost care and maintenance to function properly. But excessive fat inside it not only restricts it from its normal functioning but also makes it inflamed, weak, and prone to scarring which possibly may also result in liver cirrhosis or liver failure, if not treated timely.

Worry Not! There are multiple wonderful home remedies for fatty liver available under Ayurveda, through which the condition can be cured. Ayurveda mainly relies on Ayurvedic medicines, herbal remedies, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications to remove the excess fat and awaken a sense of healthiness in the Yakriti, commonly called the liver.

Types of Fatty Liver

alcoholic fatty liver

AFLD: Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

The obvious cause of this type of fatty liver is the high dosage of alcohol. Most of the time, AFLD does not show any symptoms until it becomes serious. Quitting alcohol and commitment to healthy lifestyle changes can help a lot in curing this disease.

non alcoholic fatty liver

NAFLD: Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

This type of fatty liver does not happen due to heavy alcohol consumption. The actual causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver are poor dietary choices (spicy & junk Food), excessive medications, stress, obesity, insulin resistance, poor lifestyle etc.

Causes of Fatty Liver

There can be multiple factors responsible for liver diseases. However, if we talk about fatty liver alone, the main causes are as follows:

  1. Alcohol Abuse: Alcohol contains excessive fat and calories which once gets into your system start to accumulate in the liver. Also, alcohol is a major contributory compound for causing liver inflammation.
  2. Faulty Diet: Your diet can also be responsible for your poor liver health. The consumption of oily, fried, stale, not properly cooked, and frozen food creates extra pressure on your liver. Furthermore, excessive dairy products and non-vegetarian items, being heavy to digest, can also cause fatty liver.
  3. Metabolic Syndrome: Health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, low HDL cholesterol levels, etc affect the body’s ability to respond to insulin resistance. This results in hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, linked with liver fat.
  4. Long-term medicines: The consumption of steroid-based medicines for extended periods harms your overall body, including the liver. They disturb lipid and glucose metabolism, which eventually results in fatty liver.
  5. Obesity: Obesity is another significant factor that contributes to fatty liver development by supporting the inflammation of the cells in the liver followed by fat storage. That’s why most of the fatty liver patients are obese.
  6. Genetics: The preposition is not always necessary, but in certain cases, genes may also play a significant role in the development of fatty liver diseases, mainly NAFLD.

Fatty Liver Symptoms

Fatty liver is often asymptomatic until it turns serious. However, below are some symptoms that patients experience during this problem:

  1. Sharp upper Abdominal Pain: A sharp pain in the upper right side of the abdomen is a common problem that fatty liver patients encounter. Such pain could be both persisting and sometimes may come and go.
  2. Loss of Appetite: There could be a drastic drop seen in the appetite of a person who is dealing with fatty liver, or any other liver concern. They often eat less or start to avoid their meals completely.
  3. Nausea & Vomiting: Due to inflammation and poor liver functioning, patients often have to deal with problems such as nausea and vomiting, especially after eating. Additionally, they also stay tired.
  4. Yellow Eyes & Pale Skin: During fatty liver disease, yellow eyes, pale skin, drowsiness, and jaundice-like complications can also be observed among the patients.
  5. Dark Urine: Dark-colored, blurred, and foul-containing urine is yet another common indication that can be observed among individuals who have kidney-related problems.
  6. Unexplained Weight Loss: If patients do not treat fatty liver timely, then it can progress to advanced stages such as fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver damage, where they may experience significant weight loss.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Fatty Liver

Ayurveda considers fatty liver as Kaphaja yakrit dalludara induced by the imbalance of pitta-kapha dosha and poor dietary choices. It mainly includes:

  • To prevent rakta-kapha dushti in the system, the usage of herbs such as kutki, amla, triphala, giloy, punarnava, haridra, daalchini, mulethi, tulsi, bhringraj is advised to the maximum.

  • For a comprehensive rejuvenation, panchakarma therapies constitute a major part of Ayurvedic treatment. Virechana and Vamana are 2 best karma that are mostly used for treating fatty liver.
